AFI – Bodies
Each new AFI album faces "AFI is not what they used to be" comments. Starting with "Black Sails in the Sunset", when more gothic was added to the fast punk sound, some fans left, but new ones came in their place and in larger numbers. The peak of AFI's commercial success came on the album "Decemberundergroud", December of 2006, after which the band began losing new fans again, because on "Crash Love" the band's frontman Davy Havoc stopped looking androgynous and the whole emo thing fell off. But what always pleased me about AFI, is that they did not pay much attention to that, it feels like their mindset recording “Bodies” was like "well, fans are coming and going, in 2021 we will sound like The Cure and what you’re gonna do." I really enjoyed this record.

Cold Cave – Fate In Seven Lessons
If AFI gives a desire to keep gothic dances going – the new Cold Cave album will just come in handy. “Fate In Seven Lessons”, according to the duo, is their most heavy and romantic release with dreamy and sexy neo-psychedelic gothic, driven by synthesizers and poetry. Seven melancholic and emotional songs of love and longing.

Crypta – Echoes Of The Soul
Formed in June of 2019, the four-piece line up consists of the vocalist and bassist Fernanda Lira and Luana Dametto on drums (both former members of thrash metal frontrunners NERVOSA), plus supremely talented guitarists Sonia Anubis (Cobra Spell, Ex-Burning Witches) and Tainá Bergamaschi (Ex-Hagbard). These four powerful women present rather melodic, moderately blackened death / thrash metal. I will also single out the release cover by Wes Benscoter, who is internationally famous for his stunning covers for bands such as Slayer, Kreator, Black Sabbath and many more.

Eremit – Bearer Of Many Names
The Germans of Eremit not only have a beautiful logo, but also put out sick doom metal, with the tracks which are 20-30 minutes long and are surprisingly really fun to listen to. It's not half an hour of heating the same riff without denouement and culmination – you completely fall into the music without even noticing it. Those wolf howls in the first songs place the band immediately into my top doom releases of the year, and this is only a first of many wild cards that Eremit pull from their sleeves on "Bearer Of Many Names".

The Swedes of General Surgery on their seven-track EP "Lay Down and Be Counted" showcase brutal, but at the same time melodic, catchy and memorable death metal / grindcore in the spirit of 90s Earache Records.

Go Ahead And Die - s/t
The band features the vocalist and guitarist Max Cavalera joining forces with his son, singer, guitar and bass player, Igor Amadeus Cavalera as well as with Zach Coleman on drums to produce a sound that mixes elements of death and thrash metal with early Celtic Frost influences and a punk-rock attitude.

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - Butterfly 3000
Until today Australians King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard have not provided any information about their 18th album: no singles, no album cover, no tracklist, no nothing. It was only known that the album will have 10 songs and would be released on their own label KGLW. And there was this Instagram post where you could read the press release in Japanese, German, Chinese, Russian, Turkish, Dutch, Thai, Indian, Spanish and French. (how do you do my fellow English-speaking users?). But then the day came, and “Butterfly 3000” hits streaming and it's, as always, a fun trip.

ShitKid - Sort Stjerne!
I already mentioned the Swedish lo-fi duo ShitKid on Weekly Digest before, they captivated me with both a stupid name and interesting, extraordinary music. "Sort Stjerne!" – is the last release of ShitKid as the project ceases to exist. "Sort Stjerne!" contains close to an hour worth unreleased tracks written throughout ShitKid’s career, ranging from the lo-fi pop of her first EP and the garage rock of the debut LP “Fish”, to the synth pop and the alternative pop – a definite look into the creative world of ShitKid, never to be seen again.

Wristmeetrazor – Replica Of A Strange Love
Metalcore band with a name that is difficult to surpass in drama presents a rather interesting album inspired by Nietzsche, Foucault and LaVey and produced by Isaac Hale from Knocked Loose, which also appeared on the track "Last Tango In Paris". Early 00s metalcore vibes, but good.
